A person with the title of Hazard mayor is not known for the first time in more than 30 years.

The four city commissioners have less than four weeks to appoint the next mayor of hazard.

However, that person would only serve until December 31, then a newly elected mayor will take over.

Bill Gorman's parking spot in front of Hazard City Hall is still empty, and the city is trying to figure out who will succeed the only mayor to ever serve in the building.

"This has never happened before. We have certain procedures we have to go through," said Lou Ella Farler, a city commissioner.

Farler and the other three commissioners have less than four weeks to appoint an interim mayor to fill the remainder of Gorman's term.

"We're not trying to replace him. We're trying to move forward with the city and do what we can. It will be a change and it will be a challenge," said Farler.

There is also the matter of who will follow him in office for the next four years. There are only two names on the ballot, and one of them is Bill Gorman.

"His position on the ballot will not be filled. There will be notices posted at the precincts saying that any votes cast will not count or be tabulated," said Les Fugate from the Secretary of State's office.

Former city police officer Ken Bryant is the only other name on the ballot, but there is still time for write-in candidates to file.

Farler actually was voted a commissioner as a write-in candidate, replacing her father. She says ultimately the commission just wants to honor the legacy of Mayor Gorman and help the city move forward.

The city attorney also tells us that if the commission does not appoint a replacement within 30 days, Governor Beshear could step in and do that.

The deadline to file as a write-in candidate for the general election is Friday October 22 at 4:00 p.m. Perry County Clerk Haven King says no one has registered at this point.
