ROWAN COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - An accident along Christy Creek Road just east of Morehead claimed the life of a woman. Police say the accident happened around 9:30 AM.
"Best way to describe it is mainly driver's side to driver's side," said Kentucky State Police Master Trooper Joe Veeneman.
Police say two vehicles, a red pickup truck driven by Dustin Rayburn, and a black Jeep driven by Wendy Williams were coming around a curve in the road, when the Rayburn's truck crossed the centerline and collided head-on with the Williams' Jeep. After colliding with the truck, Williams' Jeep flipped off the shoulder of the road. Williams was airlifted to UK Hospital, where we're told she died. Police say Rayburn was flown to a Huntington hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police say they don't believe speed or alcohol were factors in the crash. They say it appears It was simply a terrible accident.
"It appears the driver of the pickup truck just crossed the centerline. We're not really sure...we're still looking into the reasons why he crossed the centerline. It appears that for one reason or another, whether he was distracted, fell asleep, whatever, he just crossed the centerline and that's when the collision happened," said Trooper Veeneman.
Police say deadly accidents are always hard to work, but it's especially rough during the holiday season.
"They're heartbreaking enough doing on a day-to-day basis, but during the holiday season, it just makes it tough on the troopers and responders and everybody in general," said Trooper Veeneman.
