SALYERSVILLE, Ky (WYMT) - If you thought the days of missing school were over, think again.

Heavy rains caused officials in Magoffin County to cancel classes but this time, for flooding.

It is a tranquil scene just a few miles south of Salyersville. However, there is a problem.

There is water where there should not be and that is why Magoffin County Schools Superintendent Stanley Holbrook said administrators had to cancel school on Friday.

"My phone starts ringing about five o'clock in the morning," said Holbrook.

School officials tell WYMT after the winter we have had, nobody wants to talk about canceling school but when you see roadways completely covered by water, they do not really have a choice.

"We do not want to get a child to school and then it flood and we cannot get them back home," said Holbrook.

Friday marks the district's 27th day of canceled classes.

"I have been in education 35 years and this is the second worst in 35 years," said Holbrook.

But Director of Student Services David Gibson said this is the first time in the 2013-14 school year that they have had to close because of water.

"We know that we are going to miss X number of days on average and we try to build those into our calendar," said Gibson.

As of right now, the last day of school is June 5th. But administrators hope to move that date up, as long as the water stops rising, to May 30th.

"I am so sick of getting up at 5 o'clock in the morning. That makes for a long day," said Holbrook.

The superintendent adds that the students are also ready to finish the year uninterrupted.

"The kids at first liked to miss school. Then after missing a few days, they get to where they want to come back. Their mom and dad sure want them to come back after a few days," said Holbrook.

School staff tell us the water is already going down. Also they tell WYMT that they plan for snow days and even flood days by going longer each day than state law requires.
