The Historic Barter Theatre in Abingdon,Virginia, almost eighty years old and a regional landmark, announced it needs to raise $475,000 before the end of the year to continue it's tradition of high quality productions.
Barter officials say although ticket sales are good and stable, they only cover about 62% percent of the theatre's costs. Combine that with a steady decline in state and federal funding since 1979, the non-profit theatre is forced to rely on donations to meet its bottom line.
"People think because we are the State Theatre of Virginia, they think we're funded by the state and the point of the fact is we're not," says Richard Rose, Producing Artistic Director at Barter.
Another unknown fact about the theatre, for every actor on the stage it takes 10 people working behind the scenes to produce that one element. Barter employs close to 350 full and part time employees, all which are necessary.
