HARLAN, Ky. (WYMT) - People across the region volunteered their time on this holiday to try and make sure every mouth was fed.

Before the traditional dinner, residents and volunteers sang “America, The Beautiful” before saying grace.

Dozens at Christ's Hands shelter in Harlan sang thanks and praises on Thanksgiving.

“I am thankful that we live in a country where we can do pretty much what we want to do,” said volunteer Barbara McCoy.
“I am thankful to have a warm house and a loving family.”

One former resident said he has come back many times to visit after he was given shelter when a fire displaced him from living at home for a while. He said he is grateful places like that exist.

“Thank God for being alive and thank God for everything,” said John Massengil.
“God is all you need, everything else is going to pass.”

Volunteers said they want to share their blessings.

“We need to reach out a hand and be a beacon to the community and this is a part of our larger community,” said McCoy.

McCoy said they wanted to lend a hand to anyone who needed a place to celebrate the holiday. She said feeding the hungry was in line with helping fulfill the Christian organization’s mission.

“We cannot reach them spiritually if we do not give them something to fill up their stomachs first.”

Massengil echoed the same sentiment.

“Give God all the glory and praise,” said Massengil.

Workers said the shelter is open year round to just about anyone. Volunteers said around 18 people currently live at the shelter and they are always in need of more volunteers. For more information visit the shelter at 112 Railroad Street Harlan, KY 40831, or call (606) 573-6030.
