The Westcare homeless shelter in Pike County is closed temporarily after bed bugs were found in the building.

Westcare officials say some people staying in the shelter complained that they had bug bites. After searching the building, they found bed bugs in some of the bedding and mattresses.

They closed the building while exterminators work to get rid of the bugs.

The people staying in the shelter were moved into temporary housing.

"We want to continue to provide a good service to the community, and we felt like this was the best route for us to eradicate ourselves of the bed bugs," said Ervil Looney of Westcare Kentucky.

The shelter will reopen on April 4.
