Pikeville Medical Center officials are commenting on a settlement in a whistleblower federal lawsuit.
Four years ago, Doctor Michael Fletcher claimed the hospital over-billed Medicare for work in a pain management clinic.
In the settlement released this week, Pikeville Medical Center paid more than $36,000 in the settlement, but did not admit any wrong-doing.
“We think it's important for the public to recognize that Pikeville Medical Center called in a consultant to look at those issues and that's actually how Dr. Fletcher first became aware that there even was an issue, and Pikeville Medical Center self-reported this to the government long before any lawsuit was ever filed, so we really see it as not much of an issue,” PMC attorney Cindy May Johnson.
Doctor Fletcher accused the hospital of not making any changes to fix the problem, but the hospital's attorney says the problems were dealt with in 2007.
