Prank call leads to water damage at hotel

It was a wake up call that came much earlier than expected for an unsuspecting third floor guest of Somerset’s Hampton Inn Hotel. The caller, though, acting as if he was the front desk clerk had an unusual request.

“Making the tenant believe there was a problem with the sprinkler system. They needed their assistance to do something to it,” said Lt. Shannon Smith of the Somerset Police Dept. on Tuesday.

Yet the action of the so called fix to the sprinkler, ending up causing the problem the tenant was tricked into believing he was actually fixing.

“There was a considerable amount of water that came out before they were able to stop it.,” said Smith.

The fire department was called, along with police, who now say whoever called the hotel guest could very well face a Class D felony.

“The hotel itself was targeted more so than the actual tenant of the room,” said Smith.

There was no comment from anyone with Hampton Inn. Several guests did spend the rest of their night at the nearby Holiday Inn Express, according to that chain's manager.

Clean up crews were seen removing water from the hotel late into the morning. Police are now following up leads to find the prankster.

“Technology is in our favor. We will follow up with a number of different means,” said Smith.
