House panel OKs bill limiting cold, allergy meds

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Popular over-the-counter cold and allergy
medications like Mucinex D and Sudafed would be available only in
smaller quantities under a bill that moved a step closer to passage
on Monday.

The House Judiciary Committee gave its approval Monday
afternoon.

The goal is to limit access to large quantities of medications
that contain pseudoephedrine, a key ingredient in the illegal drug
methamphetamine that's being widely abused in the state.

The proposal that already has cleared the Senate would limit any
one person's purchases to no more than 7.2 grams in a month or 24
grams in a year. People who need more than that would have to get a
prescription.

The measure allows individuals to purchase roughly two boxes of
the medications each month.

The legislation is Senate Bill 3.
