MONTICELLO, Ky. (AP) - Houseboat manufacturers in southeastern
Kentucky have been sinking since the economic downturn nearly dried
up orders, but the industry is looking into building landlocked
homes that could offer an economic lifeline.
Residents in the hard-hit town of Monticello on the edge of
Appalachia are rooting for a revival among the few remaining
houseboat makers that could bring back jobs and hopes for a better
future.
Federal, state and local officials attended a ceremony Friday
for a prototype modular home built by houseboat manufacturer
Stardust Cruisers. It has made two energy-efficient homes. Each
measures about 1,000 feet with two bedrooms and one bath.
Monticello resident Johnny Brummett II is among those rooting
for a comeback. Brummett longs for a stable career and better pay,
and says he'd like to land a job with one of the area's remaining
houseboat makers.
