WYMT Severe Weather Alert

Hundreds affected by flash flooding

Severe storms pounded parts of the region this afternoon.

Hundreds lost power. Heavy rain turned roads into creeks and lightning hit WYMT’s tower during the 6 pm newscast.

Culverts in Hazard quickly filled up with water, flooding roads and even causing one police officer to get stuck. Those who witnessed the deluge from mother nature say they had to change their plans after they could not get to where they wanted to go.

“There was a guy when we pulled in here who was dragging a tree branch under his car with him,” said Crystal Cook.
Cook said she and her mother had to camp out at the Shell gas station instead of going to Long John Silver’s after the intersection flooded.
“We just pulled in here and made a make shift dinette and started eating here.”

The high water receded quickly in Hazard. No injuries or major damage was reported.
