HAZARD, Ky (WYMT) - Hundreds of people lined up Friday in Perry County waiting for folks at Big Creek Baptist Church to start handing out food.

The church is just one of the many distribution locations God's Pantry Food Bank supports.

This year officials say the demand is getting higher, yet the donations just are not coming in fast enough.

A truck from God's Pantry Food Bank in Lexington arrived around noon to deliver pallets of food which church members then boxed and bagged up for needy families.

"We have everything from rice, to cereal, to crackers, to muffin mix, pinto beans, meat and beef stew," said Jim Castlen who is a member at Big Creek Baptist Church.

They have enough to feed around 175 families in Perry County.

"They really don't understand the people's needs and how they are starving, and people really needs to help," said Worley Campbell who lives in the Avawam Community of Perry County.

Church members say the food should last families for one week.

Each time they distribute the food, they say more and more people are coming, but God's Pantry Food Bank officials say donations are down.

"We've seen several of our large donators of food whether it's the federal government or the food industry at large, they have been on the incline," said CEO of God's Pantry Food Bank Marian Guinn.

But despite a few bare shelves, God's Pantry Food bank is still finding ways to bring in additional food.

"This is a blessing from God for our community, and we are just channels passing it on to needy folks, and we are glad to do that," said Castlen.

Big Creek Baptist Church distributes food the third Friday of every month.
