A Floyd County man is mourning the loss of his wife after a freak accident. Police say a car was traveling east on Kentucky 680 when it hit a deer. The deer was then thrown into the air and came crashing through the windshield of Robert and Ardith Harper's car, killing her instantly.

Robert Harper told me he and his were on their way to meet up with family to celebrate their son's job promotion. Unfortunately, they did not make it there.

Robert Harper and his wife weren't expecting anything out of the ordinary to happen on their drive to lunch.

"There was a car that was approaching us in the other lane. A deer jumped out in front of that car. The car hit the deer and sent it airborne. I lost sight of the deer," Harper explained.

The deer then came back down through the windshield of the Harper's car.

"Our car cut the deer in half, the head of the deer went off the side of the road. The entire rear of the deer came through the windshield on her side, striking her. It ended up in the back seat of the car."

But Robert says at that time, he didn't realize the deer hit his wife.

"I said are you alright? and I looked at my wife. And when I looked at her I realized she was already gone," said Robert.

Robert tried to saved her.

"My only thought was to get her back and it was very difficult to come to the realization that I was not going to get her back. Very hard. I hope that she didn't see anything, that she didn't know anything."

He says will miss his wife of 39 years.

"My wife was a very loving person. We never hung up the phone from each other nor did we ever leave each other to go anywhere without telling each other we loved the other person," Harper said.

Robert says he encourages others to do the same because you never know when your loved ones will not be there anymore. Harper says his wife never wanted a funeral, so he is honoring her wishes.
