Identity Thieves Steal $5.2 Billion With Phony Tax Returns

WASHINGTON D.C. (WYMT) - The IRS has sent out billions of dollars in tax refunds to identity thieves.

A new report finds the agency failed to prevent more than one million potentially phony tax returns from being processed last year.

That resulted in refunds totaling more than five billion dollars.

IRS officials say the thieves often steal the identities of dead people, children, or people who do not regularly file tax returns.
