FRANKFORT, Ky. (WKYT) - Today, there are more than 140,000 immigrants in the Commonwealth. In support of immigration reform and House Bill 396, more than two dozen supporters gathered in Frankfort to rally for "New Kentuckians at the Capitol."

The organization, which is supported by the ACLU, organized the rally in support of Immigration Advocacy Day. Participants talked with legislators about why they should consider public safety measure, House Bill 396.
The bill, which was filed by Kentucky representative Johnny Bell, would provide undocumented immigrants and immigrants awaiting authorization, access to driving certificates.

Shaky Palacios, who moved to Kentucky from Mexico City when she was 12, was one of the many speakers at the event. "I'm currently waiting for a response on my DACA, if I get it I would be on a two year work permit other than that, nothing else."

At the lobby there were people of all ages, but mainly those of the younger generation. Many of them not fighting only for themselves, but also for their families. "Give hope to my parents, cause I see them struggle so much. I no longer care about me as much as I care for them."

"They put youth as dreamers, the original dreamers are our parents. They came here with a dream for us to have a better future and that's what it's all about," explains Sagar Patagundi, a University of Louisville student and immigrant from India. "This is for my parents, they are the ones that have risked it all, now I'm doing what I can to give back."
