The Memorial Day holiday typically makes a busy weekend for police across the mountains.
Kentucky State Police reported five separate accidents in the region over the weekend resulting in five fatalities.
Several accidents, both motorcycle and vehicle, and even a drowning in whitley county kept officials in the area occupied and alert.
State police in Hazard were busy working two fatal accidents in one day an increase from last year.
"Buckle your safety belts and if you're on the lake, don't be drinking and boating. We want everyone to have a good time, and we want everyone have a safe holiday and enjoy their visit to the state of Kentucky, but we want you to do it in a safe manner," said Tony Watts, a trooper with state police in Hazard.
Police hope their campaigns saved some lives this weekend, and they encourage people to still be safe with just a couple hours left of this holiday.
