From sister station WVLT:
The mother of a Claiborne County, Tennessee Marine injured in Afghanistan is asking for your prayers. LCpl Cody Evans lost both of his legs and fractured his pelvis in an IED blast Thursday. His mom, Regina, told us he's got the will to get through what's sure to be a difficult recovery.
"He's just a strong willed young man. He's magnificent. He's fun-loving, and he loves to help people," she added.
Now, it's Evans who needs help. He's being treated at a German hospital for those injuries.
Regina's luggage is sitting in her foyer. Bags packed, she's ready to leave the house at a moment's notice to meet her son when he's flown to Maryland to recover.
"He'll be in hospital for quite some time, and then into the physical therapy part," she said.
But she's getting the support she needs while she waits. The Speedwell community is littered with yellow ribbons. An Evans family friend gave out hundreds of them, and people have been tacking them to doors and fences in a silent show of support for the marine on his long journey home.
"I am just amazed. I'm in awe of all the support I've gotten."
Regina said neighbors, local churches and businesses are reaching out; the support has even gone viral.
"The whole eastern seaboard it seems like has got prayer chains going for him."
People are offering thoughts and prayers, but also physical labor.
Regina told us, "I've had 4 or 5 offers already from people that want to come in and build ramps for my home and re-figure it for when he does get home."
Evans hopes her son will be flown stateside early next week. She plans to stay in Maryland for his entire recovery.
