WHITESBURG, Ky. (WYMT) - An eastern Kentucky jailer says an inmate charged with murder planned to use a hypodermic needle and sharpened pencil as weapons in a plot to escape from jail.
Letcher County Deputy Jailer Jeff Mullins says they found the items under James Maggard's bunk in his jail cell after receiving a tip.
Maggard is behind bars for the alleged murder of Drad Fleming earlier this year.
In a recent interview, he told us he and Fleming had gotten into a fight and that he blacked out, but denied killing Fleming.
Fleming’s estranged wife Stephanie Fleming and Austin Ison also face charges in connection with the crime.
