Inmates say they got high while out on work release.

About 30 inmates on the work release program were sent to the old Harlan County courthouse to clean up debris from renovations.

When they got back nearly one dozen inmates could not pass a drug test.
Jail officials say the inmates found and took prescription pills when they were supposed to be cleaning.

Inmates say they found prescription pills in an old evidence room.

Timothy Hughes was the only inmate that wanted to talk to WYMT.

"We got high... ain't nobody's fault but ours," said Hughes.
"We'd seen a bunch of nerve pills sitting there. So we took some. Next thing you know we are messed up and getting charged with contraband," said Hughes.

Warrants were issued to the inmates.
They will also spend nearly 100 days in isolation and will no longer be eligible for the work release program.

Jailer Curt Stallard says evidential items were supposed to be removed two months ago, but he is not putting the blame on anyone but the inmates.

"You don't point a finger at anyone because it's the inmates fault. They'd prove if they have the opportunity to get more drugs they will take them," said Stallard.

As for Hughes, he says he is ready to pay the price for what he did.
"It's a bad thing to get high unless you want to end up in a place like this... but I did," said Hughes.

And now he will face the consequences.

Officials say it is not clear what type of pills the inmates took.
In fact, the pills could be more than 40 years old.
The medication is being sent to a lab for review.

The inmates charged are as follows:

Jesse Brooks
Reggie Cottrell
Timothy Hughes
Wayne Middleton
Calvin Pace
Thomas Reynolds
Chad Saylor
Justin Simpson
Cebert Smith
Dustin Smith
Jimmy W. Smith
