Inside new Pike County Judicial Center

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - Folks in Pike County have been tracking the progress of the new thirty-three million dollar Judicial Center from the outside, but many are wondering what it is looking like on the inside.

Some say they are already impressed by the building that is still under construction. Pike County Judge Executive Wayne T. Rutherford explains, "It blends in, the architect did a great job, it blends in with this old courthouse here. It is going to be great for Pike County, what an addition this is to main street in Pikeville.

Officials believe the inside will be even more impressive. Pike County Circuit Judge Eddy Coleman says, "When you come to court at Pike County now you kind of walk in the jail lobby."

Officials say the current Hall of Justice is a newer building, but it s simply too small. Judge Rutherford says, "We have probably the third largest case load in the commonwealth as far as the state courts."

Inside the building you can already see the improvements and benefits. The obvious is more space but you can also see more technology being installed.

Judge Coleman explains, "Will have the ability for attorneys to play their electronic media and display it for the jury and electronic service for peoples laptops and wifi."

Officials say another important element is the sense of pride for Pike County. Judge Coleman says, "It is a building that people can say with pride, this is where our courts are held."

The new center is a certified green building with many energy efficient aspects.

Officials say once courtrooms are moved into the new Judicial Center, the Hall of Justice will be used as an annex for county government.

The project is ahead of schedule and officials say they plan to be moved in by June.
