Investigators are working to determine what caused a trailer fire that killed two people in Pike County.

The state deputy fire marshal believes the fire on Thursday in the Justice Bottom area of Phelps was accidental.

Charlotte Scott and Kenny Hamilton lived in the home and died in the fire.

The landlord, who lives across the street, tried to save them.

Larry Mitchell says Charlotte Scott's mother could not get a hold of her daughter on Thursday and asked him to go to her trailer and check on her. When he got there, Mitchell says he knew something was wrong. "So finally I just took a hand and knocked the door open, got in, and seen it filled with smoke. I run through and found them on the bedroom floor, so I got one of them and dragged out. I went back and got the other and dragged out," said Mitchell.

He called 911 and started CPR.

"Three of our guys were on scene within 6-7 minutes. Three of my firemen were doing CPR on the man. The lady, she'd already expired," said Phelps Fire Chief Ronald Vaughn.

The deputy coroner pronounced Scott dead at the scene. Hamilton died later at Pikeville Medical Center.

"The families are having a tough time," said Vaughn

"I wish I could have done something quicker," said Mitchell.

Firefighters put out the flames quickly.

The state deputy fire marshal believes it started inside the bathroom and appears to be electrical.

The deputy state fire marshal says it could take several more days to determine the exact cause.

R. S. Jones and Son Funeral Home in Phelps is handling the arrangements for Charlotte Scott.

Arrangements are pending for Kenny Hamilton.
