BELL COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - Cigarettes wrapped in pages of the Bible are just some of the items Bell County jailers have caught inmates with lately.

The Bell County Detention Center has boxes full of drugs and other contraband they say inmates tried to smuggle in the past year.

"It's extremely a lot, but this is nothing unusual. A lot of people in the community doesn't think this goes on, but it does. I mean you can see all the stuff we have," said Bell County Jailer Rex Miller.

Items range from marijuana to pills to even heroin. Miller says they were confiscated from inmate's body cavities or other items.

"This is cigarettes in Bible pages. We see that all the time," Miller said.

While Jailers say inmates will do anything to get these items inside, they are doing what they can to get them out.

"It was just piling up on us," Miller said.

Friday afternoon, Operation UNITE officers collected it all and will properly destroy the items.

"We're happy to help out. UNITE's all about partnership and helping other organizations, and this is one way we can really support the jail," said Paul Hays, Operation UNITE Law Enforcement Director.

Jailers and UNITE officers say getting the drugs out of the jail makes it safer for everyone.

"It's real dangerous. They'll hurt each other over it just to get a pill. They'll hurt each other," said Miller.

"It will keep drugs off the streets which is what we're ultimately trying to do," said Hays.

Jailers say they are thankful UNITE is getting rid of the drugs.

Jailers say all of the court cases are closed on the confiscated items being destroyed.
