H.O.M.E. offers job training for out of work coal miners

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - With dozens of laid off coal miners trying to figure out where to turn next, the Hiring Our Miners Everyday program is offering some needed job training.

Representatives from various industries were in Pikeville on Wednesday talking to out-of-work coal miners about job training they are offering through the H.O.M.E. initiative.

Program Manager Bridget Back explains the program, "Eastern Kentucky Concentrated Employment Program has launched this initiative to bring our dislocated miners and spouses in and help them retrain or find a new career."

Officials have worked the last couple of months to get laid off coal miners into the H.O.M.E. initiative. Wednesday's event brought those enrolled in the program together to hear about different types of job training.

Angella Wilson, with Registered American Moving Professionals, spoke at Wednesday's event, "It is a wonderful opportunity, about six to eight weeks of training for individuals that want to become van operators within the moving and storage industry."

Digital Comm Inc. Vice President, Russ Cornett, also presented a training program, "Twelve week training program to put men and women to work in telecommunications."

Laid-off coal miner, Jeremy May, is thankful for these training programs, "I am looking for something that will train you and get you out of the coal business. I've been laid off twice in the coal business...makes it hard to support your family and provide for small children when you don't have a job and you're trying to live on unemployment."

May says because of this program he hopes he can stay home in Eastern Kentucky, "Where I was born and this is where I will die and be buried, I don't want to have to move."

It is not too late to get enrolled and paired up with a career advisor. Officials say all you have to do is contact your local community action agency.

H.O.M.E. is hosting another training event on Thursday, January 24th, in Harlan at the Depot.
