PAINTSVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - This week we are introducing you to recipients of the Ralph Gabbard Broadcasting Memorial Scholarship. The money is awarded to three students in Eastern Kentucky each year. The second recipient is, John Rowland, a senior at Johnson Central High School.
You can find Rowland many places around the school, whether it is in the swimming pool, working hard in the classroom, or editing footage for the student operated TV station JCTV.
Rowland says, "They've always applied the same principles...hard work will always get you to what you need to do. It may not be the most straight forward way, but sometimes there is a way to achieve success without going to it directly. It is in those ways that come about around it that really help you get to where you need to go."
Rowland is taking what he learned at Johnson Central, to Eastern Kentucky University in the fall. There he plans to major in communications and pursue a career in the media field...something he says this scholarship is helping make possible.
"It means a lot, it is a huge help to me looking forward," says Rowland.
Along with skills learned in the classroom and in the water, he says being born and raised in Johnson County will also help him go far.
Rowland explains, "Get the job done that is asked of you to be done...I feel like a lot of people around here live by that hard working attitude and motto and that is something I'll be able to take with me wherever I go."
Taking a piece of the heart of Eastern Kentucky to the campus of EKU.
Rowland is also a member of the golf team and says he hopes to incorporate his love for sports with his interest in media, something he has been able to do at Johnson Central.
