JOHNSON COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - You never know when blue lights may pop up in your rear view mirror in Johnson County.

The sheriff's office is fighting the drug epidemic by targeting drug trafficking on the roads.

Mountain News rode along with deputies Thursday to see what drug interdiction is all about.

Johnson County deputies say there is no such thing as a typical patrol day.

"A lot of times you can pull someone over for no seat belt or expired plates, find dope in the car or find out they have a warrant for it for trafficking, a never ending cycle," said Johnson County Deputy David Pridemore.

He calls it a never ending cycle of drug crimes, specifically drug trafficking.

"We have had success with traffic stops in recovering large amounts of cash, large amounts of narcotics," said Pridemore.

Johnson County deputies say hitting the roads is just one way that they fight the drug problem, and they say while there are specific things they look for when patrolling you never know what you're going to drive into.

"You'd be surprised how many people you stop for simply not wearing a seat belt gets them a drug trafficking charge," said Johnson County Sheriff Dwayne Price.

They say prescription pills are the main threat, and the problem is lurking all over.

"It's not just this county. I've talked to sheriffs in surrounding counties and it's everywhere," said Price.

They say it is coming and going across state lines, especially Florida, Ohio and West Virginia.

"A lot of people use the highway to traffic drugs. It's not just in homes anymore," said Pridemore.

Officials say you can help catch drug trafficking too.

Deputies say if you spot someone driving erratically or any strange behavior you can leave an anonymous tip.
