Jones Fork Elementary earns high marks on K-PREP test

MOUSIE, Ky. (WYMT) - The results are in, and a small school in Knott County is one of the best in Kentucky. Jones Fork Elementary scored fourth in the state on the Kentucky Performance Rating for Educational Progress, or K-PREP, exam. K-PREP exams are given to students in grades 3 through 8 and cover reading, writing, math, science and social studies.

The kids were treated to a day off from their studies to celebrate. The celebration kicked off around noon. Students were presented certificates commemorating their achievements. School administrators say the kids earned it.

"I think the students and staff of this school have worked very hard and diligently for several years, and finally we're seeing the results of their hard work," said instructional supervisor Brent Hoover.

Jones Fork Elementary is a tiny school with less than 160 students enrolled. Teachers there say that just underscores the significance of the students' achievements. Kim Potter, the school's former principal, says their success is no accident.

"With this coming year the standards were raised, we knew that, we knew we had to increase the rigor, increase the instruction, and our teachers stepped up and did that," she said.

One class reached their goal of 100 percent proficiency on the test. They were rewarded for their hard work by giving their teacher a makeover. She says she did not mind. She is just proud of her students' hard work.

"We had such a good relationship. Anything that I asked them to do, they did it gladly. The parents worked with me, and it's a great group of kids," said teacher Misty Keens.

After the awards were presented, it was time to start the music and dance. Teachers say the students deserve to celebrate.
