Judge gives 10 days to release some records

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - A judge in Frankfort has ordered Kentucky officials to release records involving 90 internal reviews of child deaths within 10 days.

A lawsuit to obtain release of the records was filed by The Courier-Journal of Louisville, the Lexington Herald-Leader and the Todd County Standard. On Tuesday, Gov. Steve Beshear ordered the Cabinet for Health and Family Services to provide records involving child deaths and serious injuries.

Attorneys for the department told Franklin County Circuit Judge Phillip Shepherd on Wednesday that temporary staff was being hired to redact all of the files.

Shepherd noted that the release of the files is not aimed at blaming social workers, but to comply with the Open Records Law and give the public and the legislature insight into the challenges the department faces.
