FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - The Kentucky Supreme Court says Justice Wil Schroder has a brain tumor and will retire.
The announcement Thursday said Schroder, 66, wanted to focus on his health and spend more time with family.
Schroder of Fort Mitchell was elected to the Supreme Court in 2006 for the 6th District, which encompasses and 21-county area. Before that, he served on the Kentucky Court of Appeals and as a trial judge in Kenton District Court.
Media reported Chief Justice John D. Minton Jr. said in a statement that Schroder was "highly ethical" and brought a "sharp intellect and meticulous approach" to his work.
Leigh Ann Hiatt, a spokeswoman for the Administrative Office of the Courts, says Gov. Steve Beshear will appoint a replacement after getting a recommendation from the judicial nominating commission.
