Perry County Schools Superintendent John Paul Amis wants to make it clear that the school system had nothing to do with the removal of Principal Estill Neace. Instead it was actually a decision made by the Kentucky Department of Education.
Amis says the school was classified as a P-L-A school or persistently low achieving back in October.
"With that the K-D-E sends an audit team to do an evaluation of the school and district."
Amis says state regulations allow the K-D-E to replace principals at P-L-A schools if the principal has been there three or more years, Neace has been there seven.
"This is not a local Board of Education or local school decision at all."
As a matter of fact, Amis says the board will not even be involved with finding Neace's replacement.
"The commissioner of education will appoint a principal for Perry County Central High School." Amis adds.
The shocking news spread through the high school halls Friday morning like wildfire, many students walked out of school as a protest, something Neace says is very touching.
"The kids we don't want to lose you but I don't want to lose them either. my son is a student at Perry Central so I am looking at it from a dad as well as principal. So it has been a tough day so far." Neace says.
Superintendent Amis says the schools Site-Base Decision Making council was also removed. The state will be responsible for replacing those members as well.
All of this will take effect July 1, 2012.
