Fatal crash on I-75

WHITLEY COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - Investigators think the snow and icy roads played roles in a deadly crash on Interstate 75.

They say at the time of the accident, the conditions were much like a white out.

The crash happened in the southbound lanes in Whitley County between Williamsburg and the Tennessee state line.

Snow coming down in huge flakes showered I-75 in Whitley County. And state police tell us the spring snow lowered visibility for drivers, probably causing this accident.

"The conditions prior to the accident were very icy, snowy, and just very dangerous for driving," said Andy Croley, the Whitley County coroner.

Losing control in the northbound lane coming from Tennessee then crossing the median is what state police have gathered from the semi truck drivers involved and other witnesses.

"There's no way you can weigh the loss of a life," said Coroner Croley. "It's horrible."

The man killed, who was driving the SUV, has been identified as 27-year-old Tyler L. Armacost of Franklin, Indiana. Armacost was pronounced dead on the scene after hitting not only one but two semis, one of them head-on.

State police also say Armacost is suspected to have been driving impaired by drugs. But the coroner says he is awaiting toxicology results to make that decision.

"Struck an 18 wheeler in the back axle and then spun around and was struck again by another 18 wheeler," said Coroner Croley.

The southbound lanes of the interstate were closed for only a few minutes as officials removed the SUV involved from the scene.

One of the truck drivers received medical treatment on scene but was not taken to the hospital. The other semi driver was not injured.

WHITLEY COUNTY, Ky. -- A car crash killed at least one person on I-75 near mile marker 4, not far from the Tennessee border.

Kentucky State Police has confirmed that there is at least one fatality.

The Whitley County Sheriff's Office says that they believe one car was driving in the northbound lane when its driver lost control and crossed the median into the southbound lane, where it struck the trailer of a semi. Three vehicles are believed to be involved.

The crash occurred in the southbound lane. The lane is closed to traffic at this time. Officials said the entire interstate in that area may soon be closed.
