LOVELY, Ky. (WYMT) - A stress free vacation turned into a nightmare for one Martin County family. The family went to the beach for a relaxing time but, a fire at their home in Lovely cut the trip short.
Kentucky State Police are investigating as the family says thieves completely cleaned out their home and then set it on fire.
Rhonda York says, "We had to drive home not knowing what we were driving home to...when they say your house is burnt, you expect to find something."
Digging through what was left of their home of 20 years, "Family pictures, the kids graduation pictures, the grand baby's hospital pictures," says York. Finding nothing, not even the fireproof gun safe...they knew something was not right.
"We knew with the gun safe gone, that somebody had been in the home," says York.
She says they then began looking at pawn shops locating several of their possessions. York says it is the loss of sentimental items that hurts the most.
York says while on vacation she posted to Facebook.
"I wanted to share pictures of my granddaughter's first trip to the beach," says York.
The reason she believes the thieves targeted her home, "Know who you have on your list and wait until you're home," she explains.
York says the outpouring of support from the community is helping them get through this hard time. She says even in such a devastating time, they still feel blessed thanks to their community.
The family is still looking for their 13-year old Labrador Retriever named Belle. Her picture is attached.
