Traffic steady heading into KY Speedway

SPARTA, Ky. (WKYT) - Kentucky State Police report that as of 4pm traffic has continued to pick up throughout the afternoon but it is beginning to get lighter as it gets closer to race time.

State Police say they have opened up the Ford lots across from the Speedway on Hwy. 35 for traffic, if you are heading that way.

So far, police have no traffic issues to report and say fans continue to arrive in steady numbers at the track and have been all morning.

Traffic has been an issue in the past, and track officials have acknowledged that.

We spoke to folks at the Speedway to see what they have planned to alleviate the traffic woes.

More parking is one solution they've presented.

Track officials say getting race fans off the interstate and on the grounds faster will help keep those mile-long backups from occurring.

Kentucky State Police, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and Kentucky Speedway will use roadside message boards, Facebook and Twitter to provide traffic and parking updates to race fans. Fans within five to seven miles of the track can tune to 1620 AM. Updates will include information regarding general traffic flow and any detours created in the event of accidents.

Last year, fans saw a considerable improvement from the year before in terms of traffic, in part due to people arriving earlier, but also, because of several new parking areas.

Some things fans can expect to see along with the races; UK Coach John Calipari will be in the pace car leading the Sprint Cup race, Turtle Man will be in the fan-zone at 4:30 Saturday afternoon, and the 19th Engineer Battalion out of Fort Knox will be in attendance as a part of the Armed Forces Foundation Troops to the Track program.

Weather could also play a factor in the events.

Track officials say they'll stay on top of notifying race fans of any severe weather and in case of extreme heat. they'll also have more cooling stations set up.
