CORBIN, Ky (WYMT) - Horse racing may be coming to eastern Kentucky.

Nothing is official yet, but officials with Keeneland released a statement saying they filed a non-binding letter of intent with the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission to acquire the assets of Appalachian Racing, Inc. which includes Thunder Ridge Raceway in Prestonsburg.

The Lexington Herald Leader is reporting Keeneland plans to put a Quarter Mile racetrack in Corbin.

"I think it was a surprise to everyone," said Prestonsburg Mayor Jerry Fannin. "It's sad to lose it, though. We have had it for quite a few years now."

Knox County Judge Executive J.M. Hall says he does not know very many details about Keeneland's plans, but he says he is excited about the possibilities of a racetrack in Corbin.

"It draws a lot people to the Lexington area, and if we can draw a lot of people from the Knoxville, Lexington area I think it will be a really big boost for our community," said Hall.

Keeneland's statement also says, "The letter of intent is contingent upon the confirmation--either by legislative or judicial means--of the historical racing administrative regulations already approved by Governor Steve Beshear and the KHRC and whose products already are in place at Kentucky Downs and Ellis Park. We anticipate that legislation will be filed prior to Tuesday's deadline."
