HAZARD, Ky (WYMT) - Are your kids safe while using social media?

You hear the stories nationally and here locally of how children can get into trouble while using Facebook, Twitter and other types of social media.

But what can you do to make sure your child does not become a victim?

One parent in Martin County says you should know your child's passwords and constantly check who is talking to them.

Lisa Koning uses social media on a daily basis, and she also lets her 17-year-old daughter.

"Facebook in and of itself is not a bad thing, but the usage of Facebook can be something that can get kids into trouble," said Koning who is also a youth director.

She says she keeps close tabs on how much time her daughter is on the computer, and who she is talking to.

"I don't check it everyday, but I do walk in the room and check the applications and make sure they are the ones that she says she is on," said Koning.

She not only has the password to her daughter's Facebook account, she also restricts her iPhone so she can not access the Internet or Facebook on it.

"You say that's strict, but when you have kids that have access to media and Facebook and everything it can be very detrimental to them," said Koning.

Sheriff's deputies in Johnson County say most kids do not see the potential danger of social media.

"They open themselves up to other persons that they don't know. Just because they send you a friend request, 9 times out of 10 they don't just want to be your friend. They are there for an ulterior motive," said Chief Deputy Kevin Pelphrey.

He says parents need to be checking their child's friends on social media.

Deputies say if you suspect someone is contacting your child that should not be, you should call police.
