FRANKFORT, Ky. (WYMT) - The Breathitt County School District is now in the hands of the state.

This comes after a unanimous vote by the Kentucky Board of Education.

The state department of education audited the Breathitt County School District back in November.

A report was given to the state commissioner of education and a motion was made for Breathitt County Schools to become state managed which means all decisions made by the local board have to go through the commissioner.

The associate commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Education says nothing but state management will work.

“There seems to be a dysfunctional relationship at the leadership level. The board is willing to make changes but they are not sure how to do that,” Hiren Desai said.

Hiren Desai says the Breathitt County School District has seen declining test scores for the past two years and there are some financial issues.

Plus he says the district has had three superintendents in six months creating instability.

No one from Breathitt County Schools attended the meeting but Desai says they are on board with the decision.

The commissioner of education will appoint a state manager to go in and start acting in the superintendent capacity.

It is unclear what will happen to the suspended interim superintendent and the current interim superintendent.

The last time the state had to go in and take over a school district was back in 1997 and that was in Floyd County.
