HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - Several schools across the region canceled school Friday, giving kids an early start to their Christmas break.

The fresh snow came as a surprise to some in Perry County.

They spent their day sledding, making snow men, and having snowball fights.

“It’s actually quite a bit more than what I expected,” said Shirley Mulllins.

For them, the day quickly turned into a classic snow day.

“It’s really cold outside so we're getting ready to go in and bake cookies and have hot chocolate,” said Mullins.

Although the temperatures were very cold, kids made the best of it.
