LACKEY, Ky. (WYMT) - Two pickup trucks collide in Knott county, leaving an elderly man dead and another man hurt.
The coroner says 89-year old Nero Patton of Mousie was killed.
State Police received the call a little after 4 Monday afternoon about a wreck on Kentucky 550 near the Knott-Floyd County line.
"From what's been determined at the scene, two trucks collided in the westbound lane of 550, and we had one of those individuals who was pronounced deceased here at the scene," said Trooper Jody Sims of the K.S.P.
People who work nearby heard the crash, and some tried to help.
"A few of our workers actually saw the scene from up on a higher story of the building, and they went out to offer assistance, as did our staff nurse," said Stephanie Kidd, who is a supervisor at the Golden Years Rest Home in Lackey.
People we talked to say they are not surprised the crash happened. They say this particular stretch of road is very dangerous.
"They go though here, coal trucks and cars, at a really fast rate of speed, and that curve, you can't see around it. There's no visibility," said Kidd.
Police are still trying to determine exactly what caused the accident.
The other driver, 30-year old Michael Smith of Garner, was flown to Saint Mary's Medical Center in Huntington.
He is listed in fair condition.
