The shooter claims it was self defense! Knox County Deputies were called to a home off Moore Creek Road Monday night by a man claiming he shot an intruder.

Authorities later determined there's more to the story.

Robert Burnett is now charged with murder. Deputies said the man he shot was not an intruder but rather a distant relative, who had been living with him until just a few days ago.

"If you pushed yourself on him, yeah he would go off," said Jerry Lou Stewart.

Stewart said she cannot get the shooting off her mind.

"He is my boyfriend," said Stewart.

Stewart's left wondering why her boyfriend Robert Burnett is now facing a murder charge.

"Bobby told him to leave and not come back, and I bet he showed back up and forced his way in," said Stewart.

Knox County Deputies got the call just before 11 Monday night. Burnett told them he was the victim of a home invasion.

"He had reported to me that a man had come into his home and shot him, possibly four or five times. He needed an ambulance," said Chad Gregory, with the Knox County Sheriff's Department.

Charles Pyle, 64, was shot multiple times. He later died.

Authorities believe alcohol played a role in the shooting.

"Mr. Pyle was sitting in a chair in the home and was shot in the chair, not in the doorway or anything of that nature," said Gregory.

Stewart said Pyle stole one of Robert Burnett's guns days ago, and Burnett kicked him out.

"I was in here when he took his gun. I was in here Saturday night. I stayed all night with him," said Stewart.

Deputies are still questioning Burnett to piece together what happened.

Burnett declined our request for an interview. He's being held on $250,000 cash bond. He also faces a number of other charges in addition to the murder charge.
