KENTUCKY (WKYT/WYMT) - The Kynect health care exchange website buckled under heavy load yesterday as nearly 78,000 visitors logged on to find information about affordable insurance plans.

People will soon be able to get information at UK Hospital as well.

Kynect is Kentucky's online health benefit exchange that's now available in the Commonwealth. Kentuckians in all 120 counties can visit (linked at the bottom of this article) to compare the cost of different health care products.

The goal of the website is to get health coverage for uninsured residents through private insurance plans or Medicaid, as well as the Kentucky Children's Health Insurance Program.

Just on the first day, Kynect pre-screened more than 70-thousand visitors to determine what type of coverage they're qualified to receive. More than 45-hundred applications for coverage have been started, with close to 3-thousand already completed.

There was a glitch in the system yesterday because of so many people visiting the site, but those problems have since been fixed. If users weren't able to get on the site and apply yesterday, they can try again today, or anytime before December 15th for coverage to begin on January 1st.

Users have until mid-March to buy healthcare that will cover them for the 2014 fiscal year and keep them from being charged a penalty.

Governor Steve Beshear will also be at UK Hospital on Wednesday to help unveil a Kynect kiosk.
