WHITESBURG, Ky (WYMT) - The Letcher County Central Band and Junior ROTC will be headed to Washington D.C. in a few weeks.

They will be the only band from Kentucky performing in President Obama's Inaugural Parade on January 21st.

In order to get there they need to raise around $75,000, and they need your help.

The director of the band says it's more than a once in a lifetime opportunity.

"Most students in this state never get that chance, and so it's not only a once in a lifetime opportunity, it's a once in a lifetime for very very few students," said Jason Griffith.

Ever since the band received their invitation to the parade, they have been practicing and preparing to march in cold weather conditions.

They are also trying to raise more than $75,000 for the trip.

That will cover food, transportation and hotel costs for the 80 students participating.

They hope to raise $1,000 per student.

So far they have raised $30,000 and are working hard to fund raise the rest.

The band will be holding several events to raise money including a radio-thon Friday, January 4 from 10am to 2pm at WTCW/WXKQ.

The will also host an exhibition January 15 at 7pm at Letcher Central High School. Admission will be $10.00, and the band will perform the parade music they will play at the inaugural parade.
