Interstate 405 is free of traffic, seen looking south from the Skirball Drive bridge, as the demolition of two lanes on the Mulholland Drive bridge continue in Los Angeles at dawn Saturday. Ramps to the normally clogged Interstate 405 were shut down Friday evening before the entire roadway was closed at midnight, setting the stage for a 53-hour bridge demolition project that will test whether this car-dependent city can change its driving habits for a weekend.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - State officials say southbound lanes on
heavily traveled Interstate 75 in Campbell County, Tenn., will
remain closed for repair work until May 21.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation said in a news
release Thursday that crews will continue to stabilize a section of
rock slope where an embankment collapsed March 8. Work began May 7.

Northbound lanes also will be affected with just one lane of
traffic open for some three miles.

Motorists have been told to expect long delays. Detours will be
posted.

The interstate flows north into Kentucky and south into Georgia.
