Last call for Letcher County firefighter

A firefighter, school teacher and beloved man in Letcher County is laid to rest.

46 year-old Michael Webb suffered a fatal heart attack at his home in Goose Creek, just hours after responding to an ATV accident.

He was a member of the Fleming-Neon Volunteer Fire Department for 27 years, and had risen to the rank of captain.

"He was always smiling, laughing and listening. Always doing things for the community," said Neon Fire and Rescue Chief Carter Bevins.

Bevins was with Webb on Tuesday night, and says never thought it would be the last call of his life.

"It was a great loss. We'll never forget him. He'll be with us forever," said Bevins.

Three children have lost their father, and Debbie Webb has to say goodbye to her husband.

Firefighters from across Letcher County and the region are left with tears of sadness, hugs of comfort, and the memories of a leader.

"He was a good firefighter, and someone who was a mentor to all firefighters," said Bevins.

But many say he was more than that.

"He was well liked and an excellent teacher. Good teacher, good friend," said Sid Tolen, a friend of Webb's.

Tolen says a fire destroyed everything his family owned, and Webb donated money to help them get back on their feet.

"He was kind. He was a good man. He never asked for anything back," said Tolen.

Friends say Webb touched many lives, and the pain of grieving is deep, but Chief Bevins says Webb's smile and kindness will never be forgotten.

"I miss him. I'll always miss him," said Bevins.

Following the procession, Webb was laid to rest at Wright-Collier Cemetery in Goose Creek near his home.
