LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - Officials in Laurel County have arrested a fugitive wanted for an assault on a female.
29-year-old Harold Gaines has been arrested and charged with assault 4th degree, in addition to 4 other outstanding warrants from Whitley County.
For the past month and a half, he's been a fugitive. But Harold Gaines now sits behind bars for a crime that was caught on tape.
Saturday night, Laurel County Sheriff's Deputies arrested 29-year-old Harold Gaines at a mobile home in East Bernstadt.
They say Gaines physically assaulted Gwen Watts on October 14th of this year.
The entire incident started when Gwen Watts confronted Gaines who was allegedly parked near her mother's driveway near Feltner Steer Road in Laurel County.
“He tried to tell her he was just behind our property using the bathroom,” Cora Watts, Gwen Watts’ mother, told us.
But Gwen Watts wasn't falling for Gaines' story.
“He was just looking for more junk metal and copper. Our copper was stolen from our barn not long ago and I think he was just looking to steal something,” Cora Watts said.
After Gaines allegedly took off, she sped off after him and made sure to record every moment.
But the cat and mouse game didn't last long. Gaines eventually stopped short, got out of the truck and began shouting at Watts. All the while, the camera was rolling.
“You would’ve thought filming it would’ve stopped him from even attacking her at all but it could’ve kept him from actually going further.”
But it certainly did go far enough -- Watts ended up with scratches and bruises and police say it was all at the hands of Gaines.
Cora Watts says recording the incident was the best thing her daughter could've done in that situation and she hopes this incident sends a message to others.
“I think it may give other thieves a lesson on sooner or later you will get caught,” Cora Watts said.
Gaines denied our request for an interview from the Laurel County Detention Center. He is charged with fourth degree assault.
