A Laurel County man is facing rape, sodomy, and sexual abuse charges all related to an alleged victim who is younger than 12 years old.
26 year old Jonathan Colby Smith was arrested earlier in the month by Kentucky State Police.
But now we've learned he has a connection to fire departments in Laurel County. We're told Smith was previously a firefighter at the Keavy Fire Department and had been trained in London. Officials said he did undergo a background check.
Smith is currently behind bars. The narrative of the alleged events is too graphic for Mountain News to explain.
But we can tell you it includes a number of sexual acts involving a child younger than 12.
State Police said it all happened at a home on Newland Drive in Laurel County. The police report said Smith admitted to some of the accusations.
Neighbors who did not want to be identified said the allegations are shocking. One neighbor said Smith appeared to be very nice and even offered to help him move into the neighborhood.
Officials at the London Fire Department told Mountain News Monday afternoon that Smith did participate in fire training there.
But they made it very clear that he was not an official member of the fire department and needed more training.
Because Smith is not a firefighter, officials at the fire department said they would not comment on camera about him or the charges he is facing.
Smith is being held at the Laurel County Detention Center on $250,000 bond. He declined our request for a jailhouse interview.
We did speak with Smith's grandmother Monday morning. She told us she had no comment and hung up the phone.
Jonathan Smith will be in court Tuesday morning.
