Lawmakers target tougher gun control laws in Kentucky

Posted: Thu 2:23 PM, Feb 07, 2013

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Lawmakers from Kentucky's two largest cities have unveiled longshot legislation intended to toughen Kentucky's gun laws.

Democratic state Rep. Mary Lou Marzian of Louisville and Democratic Sen. Kathy Stein of Lexington said Thursday the measure could save lives. But they gave it little chance of passing this year. Lawmakers in Kentucky have a long record of quashing bills that they believe would curtail gun rights.

The legislation Marzian and Stein are proposing would ban firearms at colleges and universities. It also would require judges to require people found guilty by reason of insanity to surrender their firearms, because they, by law, are prohibited from having them.

Democratic state Rep. Jim Wayne of Louisville said he hopes the legislation will start a dialogue that eventually results in tougher state gun laws.
