Leaders gather for economic summit

Leaders from Bell County, Middlesboro, and Pineville held an economic summit Thursday at the Pine Mountain State Park.

A packed house listened to presentations from development officials.

They also got an update on the progress of a clean coal plant project. The proposed site is located right off Highway 119.

Officials are now trying to get permits for the project.

“That's a lot of stuff that happens in Frankfort and behind the scenes that you don't actually see in Bell County,” Randy Bird, Sky Energy Chief Operating Officer, said.

“We're excited at the prospect of having a plant but we're not putting all our eggs in that basket... We're building a road to an industrial park and we're going to work with those folks as long as they are working with us,” Bell County Judge Executive Albey Brock said.

The development phase will last about two years.

At the end of that time, energy officials will decide whether they will build the plant.
