It is mandatory payment, but some people in Letcher County are refusing to pay their garbage bill.

According to the sanitation department, everyone with a county address must pay for their garbage pick-up service.

Sanitation billing clerk Courtney Brooks said that some residents have up to nearly $13,000 delinquent.

“We'll continue to pick up the garbage even if you don't pay for it, and that's what sort of got us into this tough financial position on these garbage bills,” said Letcher County Attorney Jamie Hatton.

Due to budget issues, county officials are handing out hefty fines if people do not pay for their trash pick-up service,

Yet, if bills continue to go unpaid, some could face criminal charges.

“They've authorized me to do is to actually start issuing criminal summons against people who violate this ordinance,” Attorney Hatton said.

County officials say the monthly price for pick-up service will stay the same, but if bills continue to go unpaid, it could go up.
