Letcher County preps for sudden snow

Posted: Mon 11:54 PM, Oct 29, 2012

The counties expected to be hit the hardest by the rare October snowstorm are along the Kentucky-Virginia border.

That includes Letcher County, where officials are working through the night to prepare for the problems that sandy could create.
Sandy is shaping up to be a historic storm across the east coast and here at home.

Sandy has already brought an ugly mix of snow, rain and wind into the mountains of Eastern Kentucky

Officials say their main concern is the impact that the heavy, wet snow could have on power lines.

“You still have a lot of leaves on trees so more moisture, ice and snow will be more likely to break the limbs on the trees and take out power lines and phone lines,” said Isaac Fields, the Communications Coordinator for Emergency Management in Letcher County.

Members of the Pine Mountain Search and Rescue crew are now working around the clock.

They help to assist people who cannot get home, people who are trapped in their homes and those who have lost power.

Emergency management workers say it is important for people to prepare for what the storm could bring.

Government officials say in the event of power outages, Letcher County Senior Citizen Centers will offer food, water and shelter for those in need.
