WHITESBURG, Ky. (WYMT) - An eastern Kentucky teenager is in trouble for allegedly sexting with underage girls.
Koree Stewart, 19, is charged with one count of distribution of matter portraying sexual performance by a minor. He pleaded not guilty.
"There are serious legal consequences," Letcher County Attorney Jamie Hatton said. "If you're over 18, which a lot of high school seniors are, they are looking at one to five years in prison and potentially being labeled a sex offender for the rest of their life."
Officials began investigating Stewart after receiving a complaint.
"On December 7th I received a call from the county attorney's office involving some pictures of young ladies that might be inappropriate," said Bert Slone, who works for the Letcher County Sheriff's Office and also serves as school resource officer in the county. "So I began my investigation and I started contacting some of the juveniles whose names were given to me that might be involved."
While executing a search warrant on Stewart's phone, police say they found nude pictures of minors.
Stewart was arrested before bonding out of jail. He is currently on electronically-monitored home arrest.
"It's very important that teenagers and their parents get the message that this type of behavior is illegal and there are very serious consequences," Hatton said.
Stewart was ordered to have no contact with the alleged victims or their families. He was also barred from social media and any electronic devices that can transmit email and texts.
WYMT contacted Stewart by telephone. He declined to comment.
Stewart is a former star athlete at Letcher Central High School, where he graduated this past year.
A preliminary hearing is set for January 29th in Letcher District Court.
The count Stewart is facing is a Class D felony, punishable by one to five years in prison.
Hatton said other people, including juveniles, could be arrested as the investigation progresses.
