Letcher Fire and Rescue now has a brand new fire truck. Local and state officials used coal severance money to purchase the truck. It is in honor of Jerry Eversole, a former firefighter who died of cancer in October.
Gary Rogers, the Letcher Fire Chief says Eversole was the voice and face behind pushing to get a new fire truck. "He was an EMT and fire fighter who always was after the fiscal court and state representatives to try to get them to purchase us a new truck . cause everybody in the county had a new truck but Letcher."
Lance Breeding, Eversole's father-in-law, says he was touched. "Jerry was my son in law for twenty years I just want to see his legend live on he wanted that fire truck so bad."
Rogers says they will put a plaque with a picture of Eversole in the truck, so he will be riding with them wherever they go.
State and local officials also donated an ambulance in memory of Eversole.
